The Identification of Qadesh
Jonathan N. Tubb
Keeper, Middle East, British Museum
In April 1881, Claude Conder visited the region of Homs in Syria in an attempt to identify the site of Qadesh,
where the great battle between Ramses II and the Hittite king, Muwatallis took place in 1274BC. Informed
by the pictorial representations of the battle on Egyptian monuments at Thebes, Luxor, Karnak, Abydos and
Abu Simbel showing the city surrounded by water, Conder recognised Tell Nebi Mend (pictured) and Tell et-
Tin as suitable candidates. Conder selected Tell Nebi Mend as ancient Qadesh and this has gained general
acceptance. But was it the city of Qadesh at the time of the battle?
